We had fifteen 7th grade students from Nagaoka City come to their sister city of Honolulu for a priceless experience.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Study Tour Program Agenda:<\/h3>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Learning History and Culture<\/h4>\n<p>During their stay in Honolulu, students learned about the history of Hawaii and Japanese immigrants at the following locations:<br \/>\n\u2022 The King Kamehameha statue<br \/>\nStudents learned the history of King Kamehameha, the king who unified Hawaii.<br \/>\n\u2022 Iolani Palace<br \/>\nStudents visited the Iolani Palace, built during the Hawaiian Kingdom, and is a surviving symbol of its history today.<br \/>\n\u2022The Japanese Immigration Learning Center (Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii)<br \/>\nStudents learned the history and impact of the Japanese immigrations to Hawaii.<br \/>\n\u2022 Radio Interview<br \/>\nWe joined a local Japanese radio station broadcast and talked about the cultural exchange between Hawaii and Japan.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2485\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiiglobal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2025\u5e74\u7b2c9\u56de\u4e2d\u5b66\u751f\u6d77\u5916\u4f53\u9a13\u30db\u30ce\u30eb\u30eb\u8a2a\u554f\u4e8b\u696d\u753b\u50cf3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2485\" class=\"wp-image-2485 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiiglobal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2025\u5e74\u7b2c9\u56de\u4e2d\u5b66\u751f\u6d77\u5916\u4f53\u9a13\u30db\u30ce\u30eb\u30eb\u8a2a\u554f\u4e8b\u696d\u753b\u50cf3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hawaiiglobal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2025\u5e74\u7b2c9\u56de\u4e2d\u5b66\u751f\u6d77\u5916\u4f53\u9a13\u30db\u30ce\u30eb\u30eb\u8a2a\u554f\u4e8b\u696d\u753b\u50cf3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hawaiiglobal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2025\u5e74\u7b2c9\u56de\u4e2d\u5b66\u751f\u6d77\u5916\u4f53\u9a13\u30db\u30ce\u30eb\u30eb\u8a2a\u554f\u4e8b\u696d\u753b\u50cf3.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2485\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Learning about the ocean with Kanako Uchino<\/p><\/div>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Volunteering and Environmental learning<\/h4>\n<p>\u2022 Learning coexistence through the \u201cHokulea\u201d<br \/>\nWe talked to Kanako Uchino who works with the traditional Hawaiian sailing canoe the Hokulea and its voyages. Kanako\u2019s talks gave students food for thought on the importance of conserving the environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Discussion on environmental protection<br \/>\nStudents had discussions on what they can do to protect Hawaii\u2019s natural environment, enriching their understanding of the subject.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2487\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a up with Hawaii\u2019s Local schools<\/h4>\n<p>\u2022Visiting Island Pacific Academy (IPA)<br \/>\nStudents had cultural introductions and class visits at IPA, getting to know their students.<br \/>\n\u2022 Visiting the Honolulu City Mayor\u2019s Office<br \/>\nWe made a courtesy visit to the Honolulu Mayor\u2019s office, where students exchanged opinions on the significance of the sister city relations of Nagaoka and Honolulu, and the importance of peace operations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2483\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a style=\"text-align: center;\">Peace Studies and War History<\/h4>\n<p>\u2022Students visited the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl), to deliver flowers in tribute to those who were lost in the war.<br \/>\nVisiting Pearl Harbor with students from Mililani Middle School<br \/>\nStudents from Mililani and Japan spent the night together at the USS Missouri Memorial, learning about the ship and its history.<br \/>\n\u2022 Discussions on war and peace<br \/>\nStudents from Mililani and Japan were given the topic \u201cWhat if I were there at the Pearl Harbor attack\u201d to think about from both the American and Japanese perspective, then exchanged their opinions with each other.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Hawaii\u2019s natural environment, and final reflections<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiiglobal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1-2025-Nagaoka-Hawkins3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u2022 Beach day at Kaimana<br \/>\nStudents enjoyed Hawaii\u2019s beautiful oceans at Kaimana beach, while learning how environment influences culture.<br \/>\n\u2022 US Marine Corps Base Camp Smith visit and student presentations<br \/>\nWe were joined by Mr. Ed Hawkins at Camp Smith, where students made presentations of what they learned during their time in Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Closing remarks:<\/h4>\n<p>Throughout the duration of this study tour program, the students of Nagaoka city studied the local culture and history while building intercultural relationships. Students were also given weighty topics of war and peace to reflect on as an opportunity to think of what is necessary for them to build a better future.<br \/>\nWe at HGEF hope to keep pursuing international exchange projects with the city of Nagaoka.
