HGEF Hoaloha Ambassador Program – Ewa Makai Middle School

06/12/2024

6/3 – 9/2024

We are pleased to report that the Hoaloha Ambassador Program (“Hoaloha”) has resumed this year after 4 -year hiatus!

Hoaloha is a study program in Japan fully sponsored by HGEF and the participation opportunity is given to a selected Hawaii local school which has hosted school visits for Japanese schools/organizations. HGEF selected Ewa Makai Middle School this year and took a couple of students, Principal, and a teacher to Edogawa-ku (Tokyo) which is one of the sister cities with Honolulu since 2022.

Principal Sanders visited Koiwa Daini Junior High School in Edogawa-ku in October 2022, and two schools have been exchanging online since then, and Ewa Makai MS hosted 20 students from Edogawa-ku last summer. The signing on the sister-school agreement was held while Ewa Makai MS visited Koiwa Daini JHS.

This year’s Hoaloha included not only the visit to Koiwa Daini JHS, but also a visit to the sumo stable, Musashigawa Beya, headed by former Yokozuna (grand champion) Musashimaru who is originally from Waianae.
