Six 8th grade students (Kahele, Hiilani, Haupu, Sanoe, Lanakila, and Ikaika), Principal Yim, and Kumu (teachers) Kehau & Nakuina made the first international study tour in nearly 30 years of the school’s history.
The group first went to Shiraoi Town in Hokkaido on 10/4-6/23. They visited the Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park where they learned the indigenes history and culture of the Ainu in Hokkaido. Ainu people have similar history and challenges the native Hawaiians have. The Anuenue students and teachers seemed to resonate the same sentiments. The next day, they visited Hakusho Junior High School in Shiraoi Town and learned the Ainu embroidery pattern of the Ainu cultural practitioners along with Hakusho JHS 7th graders.
