On October 3rd, a group from the Hawaiian Language Immersion School Anuenue left for Shiraoi Town of Hokkaido Japan, on a goodwill visit and cultural exchange. The local newspaper covered their visit in the article below:
“Deepening understandings in ethnic culture”
At Hakushou School, the six 9th graders of Anuenue School performed traditional and modern Hula dances, and afterwards learned traditional paper cut out crafting of Hokkaido’s indigenous Ainu people. Anuenue Po’okumu (Principal) Babā Yim commented how he hopes this was a good opportunity for the students to begin thinking of cultural coexistence and world peace. Students from both schools commented on how they enjoyed the experience and hope to learn more about each other’s culture in the future.
