From Fukuoka to the World

12/12/2023

We recently had the opportunity to assist “From Fukuoka to the World” a work experience course.

The 15 high school students from Fukuoka that participated in this course were all highly motivated and full of energy!

The students started the course by visiting the University of Hawaii School of Medicine from Fukuoka to study the One Health Program. Later they made their way to the James Campbell High School and enjoyed mingling with fellow high school students. There the students performed a Fukuoka custom “Hakata Ipponjime,” a ceremonial clapping done at special events, and the students of Campbell joined in for the traditional “Soran Bushi” dance.

As the course moved on, the students had many opportunities to learn invaluable lessons of global awareness and hard work, through interacting with their host families, meeting the Hawaii Fukuoka Kenjinkai to study Japanese immigrant history, having lunch with Japanese exchange students at the Bringham Young University Hawaii, and job shadowing exchange students at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

At Second Nature Farm Hawaii, they experienced working in the farming industry and practiced their natural farming methods. Finally, they visited hotels to get educated on the current state of the tourism industry, all while acquiring practical knowledge for employment.

The University of Hawaii published an article on the visit as well!
