GIA Ancestral Hometown Project #01

10/29/2022

Hawaii Fukuoka Kenjin Kai (HFKK) was awarded $70,000 in grant-in-aid(GIA) from the Hawaii State Legislature in 2019 to produce the informational bronze plaques to be presented to the ancestral hometowns of the 3 Greats of Fukuoka immigrant descendants: former Hawaii Governor George Ariyoshi (Buzen City), late U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye (Yame City), and late US astronaut Ellison Onizuka (Ukiha City).

The representatives from each family were scheduled to make the official visit to those cities in 2020, however, it was postponed due to Covid-19. In the meantime, Yame decided to erect the bust statue of Sen. Inouye, so a monetary donation was made whereas the bronze plaques were made and sent to Buzen and Ukiha in 2021. This project was taken care of by Hawaii Global Education Foundation (HGEF) on behalf of HFKK as the grant had to be managed by a 501c3 non-profit organization.

The delegation consisting of Mrs. Jean Ariyoshi and Ryozo Ariyoshi (son of Gov. Ariyoshi), Ken Inouye (son of Sen. Inouye) and his family, and Claude Onizuka (brother of Ellison Onizuka) travelled to Fukuoka in October 2022 to make courtesy calls to mayors of Buzen, Yame, and Ukiha. While Gov. Ariyoshi was not able to travel, he joined in the visit via Zoom and gave a greeting. It was the first trip for Ken to Japan and got to meet his distant relatives and visit the family graveyard. Claude enjoyed his second visit to Ukiha and also met his relatives.
